Merry Christmas!!

Happy Holidays everyone 🙂

I love Christmas.  I love all the music and the movies, and the food, and the presents.  And all the craft too obviously.  This year, unsurprisingly, I’ve been focusing more on the Christmas art.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful day, whatever you’re doing and however you choose to celebrate.  Today I’m being cosy and cuddly with my pets and lots of tasty foods.

Merry Christmas!

Arty Advent Day 21: Fan Art

For December 1st-24th (and possibly a Christmas day bonus), I’ll be posting an art-related blog post every day.  If you visit my blog during this time, let me reassure you that I’m not just an art blog.  I do all the crafts.  You can look through my archives, or stay tuned for future posts, to see the other crafty things I get up to.

Fan art is something I’ve always wanted to do. Long before I could draw, I wished I could draw just so I could do fan art.

Now I can draw, so there has been fan art.  Not much, but there will be more.  Much, much more.

There’s actually another piece, that I’m really proud of, but it’s a Christmas present so I can’t show you yet.

Arty Advent Day 20: 100 Somethings

For December 1st-24th (and possibly a Christmas day bonus), I’ll be posting an art-related blog post every day.  If you visit my blog during this time, let me reassure you that I’m not just an art blog.  I do all the crafts.  You can look through my archives, or stay tuned for future posts, to see the other crafty things I get up to.

The clever amongst you will notice that this post is a day late.  I have no excuse.  It just is. Lets move on…

I like to give myself a challenge for each year, and for 2019 I’d like to draw 100 somethings.  I asked my adjudicator friend Cayden if 100 was enough, and he’s decided that it is.  We’ve decided between us that doodles don’t count, but sketches can do.

The trouble I’m having is figuring out what I want to draw.  Do I draw 100 things I’ve been drawing already?  Like mermaids?  Or something that I’ve been wanting to draw more of?  I did know that I don’t want to draw 100 monsters.  Well, I probably will draw 100 monsters throughout the year, but I don’t want that to be the challenge.

I had some input from friends.  One suggested I draw 100 dogs.  I do love dogs, and I’d definitely like to draw some.  But the problem with dogs is that they are real, and therefore can be drawn wrong.  I do like a more fantasy genre, where I can use my imagination more.  So dogs are off the table for the challenge.  As are “species of spider” like Cayden suggested.

I have narrowed it down to 4 options.  But I’m having trouble narrowing it down any further, so I’m asking the Internet.  I’ve put up polls on my Facebook page, my Twitter feed…

…and my DeviantArt page.  I’ve even set up a Strawpoll, which you can find here.

If you’re really lazy, you could just comment on this post if you want to vote.  And if you’re super eager, you could vote on all of them.

Arty Advent Day 19: More Twitter Challenges

For December 1st-24th (and possibly a Christmas day bonus), I’ll be posting an art-related blog post every day.  If you visit my blog during this time, let me reassure you that I’m not just an art blog.  I do all the crafts.  You can look through my archives, or stay tuned for future posts, to see the other crafty things I get up to.

On my Twitter challenges post the other day I had a comment from Frank, who is @aoba1895 on Twitter, telling me about even more Twitter challenges.  So now I follow Colour Collective, Virtual Studio and Pinch Punch Post.  You’ll see my entries for Colour Collective and Pinch Punch Post later, but Virtual Studio is what I went with today.

They have different challenges every single day.  I’m going to have to force myself to not do some, because otherwise my OCD will mean I’ll end up HAVING to do them or getting very anxious.  Luckily I didn’t find time to do yesterday’s Shape Challenge…

But the two previous days really caught my interest.  The weekend saw a Snowmageddon challenge…

and Monday was Mythical Mashup time.

I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do, but I added them to my to do list, along with the second animal in a Christmas jumper for Animal Alphabets.

The idea fully solidified in my head after a quick trip to Hobbycraft to pick up some Christmas washi tape.

I saw that snowflake tape on the bottom there and knew I had my Snowmageddon.  All I had to do was make my Reindeer/Angel mash up a Christmas jumper and voila!

How cute is he?!  If I’d made it a month earlier I’d have scanned it and made it into Christmas cards.  I could do that for next year, but I’m hoping my skills increase a little in a year.  We’ll see.

Arty Advent Day 18: Colouring Books

For December 1st-24th (and possibly a Christmas day bonus), I’ll be posting an art-related blog post every day.  If you visit my blog during this time, let me reassure you that I’m not just an art blog.  I do all the crafts.  You can look through my archives, or stay tuned for future posts, to see the other crafty things I get up to.

Long before I decided I liked to draw and colour my own pieces, I was a colouring book addict.  I was into adult colouring books before they were a thing.  I’ve always had a few, but when they did start to become more mainstream they also became more available. For a hoarder like me that is both a good thing and a bad thing.

I currently have 54 books.  A few months ago I did a bit of a purge, and before that I had over 100.  I get more books every so often, when there’s one I really like and I have a spare bit of money.  And I often get one or two for my birthday, and for Christmas.

But with all the art and stuff I’ve been doing, I haven’t been colouring so much.  Until today.  On Saturday my friends were over for board games and Cayden (he who has been mentioned many times) was colouring a page in a Christmas colouring book with his Ohuhu alcohol markers.  The idea niggled in my head for a day or two, until I had to dig out one of my Christmas themed books.  And I did this…

It’s from The Garden Gnomes’ Christmas by J B Johnson, and it’s part of a series of really cute books.  I have one or two more on my wishlist.

I’m super happy with the stones around the fire.  The flames could use some work, I’ll have to do some research into that, but I love the stones.

Arty Advent Day 17: D&D Art Swap

For December 1st-24th (and possibly a Christmas day bonus), I’ll be posting an art-related blog post every day.  If you visit my blog during this time, let me reassure you that I’m not just an art blog.  I do all the crafts.  You can look through my archives, or stay tuned for future posts, to see the other crafty things I get up to.

So a while ago on Twitter I saw this post..

I really loved the idea, but wasn’t sure of my skill level.  I didn’t want to disappoint whoever I got as a partner.  But, after a day or two of hesitation, I bit the bullet and I signed up.

I was really lucky with my recipient, @MeggieSue13 – she gave lots of information about character in the sign up.  Tamasin is a Human Cleric and I really enjoyed drawing her.  This is actually my second attempt.  My sketch was good, but I was partway through colouring the inked version and I really wasn’t happy with it.  So I got the sketch out again and retraced it.  I especially love the background.  That’s the sigil of Selune, who’s the God that Tamasin worship.

And the person who drew my character Stormheart just completely blew me away.  It’s amazing!

Big thanks to @galogenida, Stormheart looks just like I imagined him!

Arty Advent Day 16: My Niece Chose My Colours

For December 1st-24th (and possibly a Christmas day bonus), I’ll be posting an art-related blog post every day.  If you visit my blog during this time, let me reassure you that I’m not just an art blog.  I do all the crafts.  You can look through my archives, or stay tuned for future posts, to see the other crafty things I get up to.

This is a challenge that’s been going around the YouTube art community.  Well, it did.  I’m a little late to the party.  I asked my four year old niece Aislynn to pick out some colours for me to use, from the set of colouring pencils I keep in my backpack for us to use together.  She picked a yellow pencil, an orange pencil and a grey pencil.

I considered using just those three pencils, but I’m really into using my alcohol markers at the moment, so I wanted to go with them instead.  And since the challenge was a palette picked by someone else, not a three marker challenge, I allowed myself to use all my yellows, all my oranges and all my greys.

I’m pretty chuffed with the result.  What do you think?
